Visitors to the Area

Most tourists to Ethiopia travel to the north. There are many remarkable Christian churches and monasteries in that region, which are still very much in use and whose rituals give a distinctively African spirit to Christian worship.

However, this tendency to visit only the north perpetuates the inequality of resource distribution within the country and ignorance about the area in the international community.

It is sad that more people do not visit the area as travelling in the region is very safe and the people overwhelmingly friendly. As suggested elsewhere on this website, the various ethnic groups and the environment are changing rapidly, but it is still possible to experience something of the region's rich cultural and ecological variety.

Part of the reason people stay away from the area is that there are few facilities specifically designed for tourists. Travellers need to be prepared to travel on crowded busses and to stay in simple hotels. Nevertheless, for those prepared to make the effort, the result will be a memorable experience.

SEPAG can

-Offer advice to European visitors before they leave

-Contact translators in the area who can help arrange a basic itinerary

-Arrange for reliable guides who can take visitors into the forest to see something of the wildlife and to visit traditional farming communities

If you would like to visit the area and need advice and help in these or other areas then please contact us at info@sepag.org.
