Historical & Political Information and Discussion

With the Armies of Menelik II
With the Armies of Menelik II, by Alexander K. Bulatovitch, published in 1900. This is the most vivid eyewitness account of the invasion of the south by the Abyssinian army. Bulatovich's descriptions underline why the events are still remembered with horror. An English translation of the entire text is available on this site, along with a translation of Bulatovich's companion text From Entotto to the River Baro (1897).

Ethiopia: A New Start?
A PDF of the Minority Rights Group's report Ethiopia: A New Start? by Kjetil Tronvoll. The report looks at the situation of minority groups throughout Ethiopia. It was published in 2000 and has been somewhat overtaken by recent events, but its conclusion - Promises Unfulfilled? - suggests why Ethiopian politics have become so unsettled. Its final recommendation is that the 'Ethiopian government should target its education, health and housing policies to ensure that the basic rights of the most marginalise and disadvantaged minorities are upheld, especially in the south of the country ...'

Ethnicity and Power in Ethiopia
A PDF of the full text of Sarah Vaughan's Ph.D. thesis
Ethnicity and Power in Ethiopia (Edinburgh, 2003). Vaughan looks at the role of ethnicity in Ethiopian politics and the tensions between centralising and centrifugal forces in the Ethiopian state. Vaughan's discussion covers the whole of Ethiopia. Her section beginning with 'Repacking Pandora's Box' in the Southern Region (pp.249-282) discusses the the role of 'ethnicity' in the struggle for advantage among peoples of the south. It's not always a very edifying tale!

No Tree, No Bee - No Honey, No Money
A PDF of Ingrid Hartmann's paper 'No Honey, No Bee - No Honey, No Money': The Management of Resources and Marginalization in Beekeeping Societies of South West Ethiopia, 2004. Ms Hartmann knows the Kefa and Sheka zones well. Her paper focuses on the interrelationship of traditional beekeeping and the caste segregation which is traditional in the societies of the region. Hartmann shows how the social exclusion of the Manjo - the hunter caste - exacerbates environmental destruction. A fascinating introduction for those unfamiliar with Ethiopia to this contentious subject.
